FAQs

Do I have to do both current-state and future-state assessments?

Not at all. In fact, many organizations understand their processes are complex. Consequently thorough review may be required before management commits to any improvement initiative. Organizations often use current-state assessments as a precursor to an HR re-organization segregating mission critical processes from more administrative process before they rebalance staff workload or re-assign areas of responsibility, as an example.

My staff are busy. How long does it take and how much effort does it take for my staff?

It mainly depends on the scope of the business process and people involved. Scope can range from one business area and completed in as little as one week or less. This would translate to four to eight hours of staff within that week. Most data collection, workshop setup, facilitation and documentation is performed by us. Assessments involving an entire business area can require one to three calendar months or more. Staff time and effort may include three to five workshops for two to three hours each with occasional brief one-on-one interviews to vet workshop output and collect data. In all cases projects and workshops are designed to minimize business disruption.

Are all levels of staff included?

Not necessarily, and depends on management preference, resource capacity and project objectives. Typically, it is beneficial to include all resources that touch the process, but this is not always practical for several reasons. The project setup phase determines the right mix.

In terms of management participation, managers may afford staff “freedom to speak openly”, while actively participate at various phases throughout the assessment process. It is critical that staff view management as fully supportive to give credibility to the project. In any case, management is constantly briefed along the process in support of the projects’ overall objectives.

Why should I use an external consultant when I can do this internally?

Consultants contribute by focusing staff on the deliverables and outcomes of the project without bias and assumption. As an additional skilled resource, there is less distraction from staffs’ daily duty. Additionally, consultants bring a broad range of industry experience recognizing common issues, challenges, and more important, solutions.
